Does Holly Like Everyday Math?


Holly issued a strong warning in against Everyday Math in 2006:

"These reform math programs have been widely criticized by students, parents, teachers, professors and mathematicians. Both programs are associated with repeated failures. In the five years since Investigations was implemented at the Newman Elementary School in Needham, fourth-grade MCAS scores have plummeted from more than 80 percent proficient or advanced to only 56 percent proficient or advanced. Attempts to supplement with Scott Foresman have been unsuccessful in reversing the downward trend. Frustrated parents are providing after-hours supplementation."

The curriculum for grades K-8 should be streamlined. It should follow a coherent progression with emphasis on mastery of key topics, there should be a focus on the critical foundations for algebra, and any approach that continually revisits topics without closure should be avoided.
